John David Holcombe

John David Holcombe passed away on Friday, March 18, 2022 at Willow Park Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.  Private service will be held at the Santa Anna Cemetery with Rev. David McLean, pastor of First Baptist Church, Santa Anna, officiating.  Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, Coleman.

John was born on November 25, 1941 in Wink, Texas to Chet and Lula Jo Holcombe.  He grew up in Bronte and Denver City, Texas where he graduated from Denver City High School.  He attended Howard Payne College in Brownwood on an athletic scholarship and later graduated from West Texas University with a degree in Economics.  In his early years, he was a professional musician playing bass and tenor saxophone with several bands throughout West and North Texas.  He  toured the nation extensively in the early 60’s with the Checkmates and at age 16 played tenor saxophone for a short time with Roy Orbison and the Teen Kings.

John married the love of his life, Mary Lou Brewer of Houston, Texas, in 1966.  They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 15, 2016.  Together, they owned Halchem, Inc., a petroleum industry chemical company, headquartered in Abilene, Texas.

He enjoyed hunting and classic cars, as well as being an audiophile and videophile.

John was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife, Mary Lou.  He is survived by his daughter, Susan Jones, her husband, Mark, and grandson, Austin, all of Willow Park, Texas.
