E. Dorris (Fussell) Scott

August 4, 1931 — December 17, 2021

Abilene

E. Dorris Scott, age 90, of Abilene, died Friday, December 17, 2021, at her daughter’s residence in Abilene.  The family will host a visitation on Monday, December 20, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas.  Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 21, in the Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Shepard officiating.   Interment will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel, Texas.

Eula Dorris Fussell was born on August 4, 1931 in the Iberis Community, Taylor County, Texas.  Her parents were Calvin Fussell and Catherine Coats.  Dorris grew up in Abilene where she also attended school. On November 25, 1948 she married Harold Loyd “Bud” Scott in Abilene.  He preceded her in death on June 24, 1976.  She graduated from Abilene Beauty School and was a hairdresser for over 40 years, working at  The Hairdresser and later Mademoiselle Beauty Shop.  She greatly enjoyed her time as a hairdresser but after retiring at age 65, she pursued a new career with Walmart for 16 more years.   She worked in the fabrics department of Walmart in Branson, Missouri, Phoenix, Arizona, Weatherford and Abilene.  While working at Walmart in Abilene she was known as “The Cake Lady” for all the delicious cakes she made for the many fund raisers that her group of co-workers held to help out their friends in need.

Dorris was also known by many as “Grandma Dorris,” a title she was proud to have.  She was a friendly person who enjoyed time with her friends and family.  In 2018 she was able to attend a Dallas Cowboys game with her family and this was one of the highlights of her life as she was a devoted fan.  She was raised in the Methodist Church but after her marriage she attended the Baptist Church.  Dorris enjoyed a long life with many adventures along the way.   She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include one son, Garry Scott of Abilene; one daughter, Terri Scott and partner Tammy Kister of Abilene; one brother, Tommy Coats and wife Jean of Franklin, Tennessee; granddaughter, Kelly Bontke and husband David (who Grandma Dorris always called Steve); great-grandson, Matthew Harrington of Abilene; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and other extended family.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jim Sumrow and sister, Leta Mae Barbee.

For those wishing to honor Dorris’s memory, the family suggests memorials be made to West Texas Rehabilitation Center or Hospice of the Big Country.

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Big Country for their care over the last several months.

Pallbearers are Timothy Kister, David Bontke, Eugene Bell, John Barbee, Eddie Barbee and John Carter.

Please leave kind thoughts and condolences for the family on her obituary page at www.livingmemorials.com.
