Billie (Brewer) Horne

November 18, 1927 — October 9, 2021

Coleman

Billie, Billie Ruth, Aunt Bill, Ruthie and above all, Meme. All names that reflect just some of the many facets of a woman known for her warmth, charm, style, humor and beauty that radiated from within. Not known to sugar coat, she was also known for her straight talk. One never had to guess what she was thinking. And yes, that picture is from December 2020!

Billie Ruth Brewer Horne, 93, of Coleman, died Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Mesa Springs Nursing Home in Abilene.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service celebrating her life at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 16, 2021, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman. The family will greet friends immediately after the service.

Billie was born on November 18, 1927, in Coleman, daughter of Alvie Curtis Brewer and Jessie Lee Johnson Brewer. She grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1946. She married Max Horne on May 28, 1948, in the parsonage at First Baptist Church in Coleman.

Billie served as the Coleman Junior High School librarian for 20 years. She loved the students, especially those who helped her in the library. She later worked for the Texas Department of Transportation in the driver’s license department, many of those years in Brownwood, TX, where she enjoyed working with the Texas Highway Patrol officers and the public.

She enjoyed Broadway shows, movies, playing bridge and dominoes, China painting, sewing, seeing new places, Starbucks and spending time with her family. She loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family.

Billie is preceded in death by her husband Max Horne; parents Alvie and Jessie Brewer; brother Aubrey Brewer; sisters Louise McCleskey and Wanda Allison Ainsworth; and great-granddaughter Emerson Horne.

She is survived by her children, Mitzi Summers (John) of Paige, TX, Kit Horne (Mindy) of Tuscola, TX, and Scott Horne of South Orange, NJ; four grandchildren, Chad Summers (Amanda Hall), Jenny Tucker (Landry), Adam Horne, and Tova Green (Allan); four great-grandchildren; and her uncle, Kelley Johnson.
