Vernon R.B. Rutherford, born on October 12, 1931, in Coleman, Texas, passed away peacefully in his hometown on July 16, 2026. A lifelong Texan with a rich heritage rooted in Coleman and Santa Anna, Vernon’s life was defined by his devotion to family, faith, and service to his community.
Growing up in Santa Anna, R.B. attended school there, building connections and friendships that would last a lifetime. These early years shaped his loving and outgoing personality—traits that would become his hallmark as he built a fulfilling life. R.B. proudly served with the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War. He was honored and proud to be a United States Veteran.
On November 24, 1954, R.B. married the love of his life, Winnie Lorene Anderson, in Fort Worth, Texas. Their partnership was one of deep affection and steadfast companionship, setting an enduring example for all who knew them. Together, they raised their family with love and integrity until Lorene's passing.
R.B. was a dedicated professional, serving for many years as the water superintendent for Haltom City and Liberty. His commitment to his work ensured the well-being of countless residents, and his diligence earned him the respect of colleagues and community members alike.
Beyond his career, R.B. was a man of faith, and a proud member of Concho Baptist Church in Coleman. His church family held a special place in his heart, and he supported and cherished these bonds throughout his life. R.B.’s warmth, generosity, and ever-outgoing nature made him a beloved presence, always ready with a friendly word or a helping hand.
A true enthusiast for adventure, Vernon loved to take cruises and relished the chance to travel the world’s waterways. It brought him great joy to invite relatives and friends along, turning every journey into a shared memory and strengthening the connections that meant so much to him.
Those blessed to call Vernon family or friend will remember his immense love for those around him. His legacy continues through his surviving family: his grandchildren Janice Porter, Andrew Rutherford, Julie Buckles, and Brian Todd; and great-grandchildren Kelly Porter, Parker Porter, and Kimberlyn Porter, along with one great-great-grandchild, Merritt Marshall. Vernon’s caring spirit also enriched the lives of his sisters-in-law, Nell Morgan, Sharon Wells, and Donna Johnson, along with his nieces, nephews, and many cousins.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Winnie Lorene Rutherford, his son Danny Carl Rutherford, his daughter Vickie Lynn Rutherford, and his parents, Oscar Vernon and Addie Edna Anderson Rutherford; and his siblings, Lucy Mauk and William Pete Rutherford.
A funeral service celebrating R.B.’s life will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Concho Baptist Church, 1700 S. Conco Street, in Coleman with Rev. Aaron Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.
Vernon R.B. Rutherford’s life was a testament to love, dedication, and joyful living. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, spirited adventure, and unwavering faith. His family, friends, and community will forever cherish the memories and the lessons he imparted by example.
