Tonya Gayle Goodwin left this world peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at her residence in Abilene, Texas. Born on December 21, 1954, in Harris County, Texas, Tonya was a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose bright and loving spirit touched the lives of many.
Tonya grew up in Coleman and Abilene, where she cultivated a deep love for her community and earned her high school diploma from Cooper High School. She further pursued her education by obtaining an associate's degree in computer technology, which laid the groundwork for her successful career. Tonya dedicated many years to working as the front-end manager at Albertson's grocery store, where her warm demeanor and strong work ethic made a lasting impression on both her colleagues and customers. Additionally, she served in the grievance department at the French Robertson Unit in Abilene, showcasing her commitment to serving others.
In her personal life, Tonya found immense joy in the small pleasures of life. She cherished vacations, especially those spent at the beach, where she delighted in the beauty of nature. Throughout the football season, she passionately followed the rivalry games between Cooper High School and Abilene High School. Game nights with her family brought her great happiness, as Tonya loved and adored her family immensely.
Tonya is survived by her children, Jasa Johnson and husband Jarvis of Abilene, and R.D. Vickers and partner Tiffany Bell of North Richland Hills. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Jazmyn Johnson and husband Patrick Jones, Justice Johnson, Jarvis Johnson, Jr., Chloe Noethen and partner Joe, Londyn Darby, Jesse Vickers, and Courtney Noethen. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Tyree Jones, Tinzlee Jones, Jruee Johnson, Addison Scroggins, River Scroggins, Willow Scroggins, and Jo'ella Scroggins.
Tonya was preceded in death by her parents, Ardell Smith and Lillian Alcorn Fritz; one son, Chad Vickers; and one brother, Richard Todd Smith. Although she will be profoundly missed, her vibrant spirit and the love she shared will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. As we remember Tonya Gayle Goodwin, we honor a life well-lived, marked by love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family and friends.
There will be no formal service. In honor of Tonya, we ask that you pass on love and kindness to a friend or neighbor.
