In Loving Memory of Tonia Black

May 11, 1960 – September 22, 2025

Tonia Black, 65, of Valera, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on September 22, 2025. She was born on May 11, 1960, in Plainview, Texas. Tonia spent her early years in Plainview before moving to Sabinal, where she graduated high school. On March 5th, 1980, she married the love of her life, Davey Black. They met on a Wednesday and said I do the very next Wednesday, their love was an unstoppable force. For the past 45 years, they chose each other every single day, building a life together rooted in devotion, faith, and family.

Tonia dedicated much of her professional life to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, beginning her career as a guard and rising through the ranks to become a sergeant. After her retirement, she and Davey moved to Valera, where she built her dream home and devoted her time and heart to her community. She served with the Valera Volunteer Fire Department, always eager to help.

One of Tonia’s greatest joys was found in the peace and beauty of her favorite pastime, horticulture. Her flowers and plants were more than a hobby; they grew abundant under her loving care. She also shared a special bond with her beloved dogs, who brought her endless happiness and companionship. Above all, her family was her greatest pride.

Tonia is survived by her mother, Millie Goree; her devoted husband, Davey Black; her children, Duane Black and Derrick Black with his wife, Jivette; and her grandsons, Ryen and Travis. She is also survived by her brothers: Steve Goree and his wife, Jan; Greg Goree; Miles Goree and his wife, Connie; Lance Goree and his wife, DeDe; and Christopher Goree.

She was preceded in death by her father, Travis Goree, whose memory will always remain close in the hearts of her family.

Visitation will take place on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, located at 400 W. Pecan Street in Coleman. The graveside service will be private for family and close friends.

Tonia’s faith as a Christian guided her throughout her life, and she leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and strength. Your care for the people you loved was not thanked enough—so thank you. You taught us tough love, how to stand for what we believe in, and how to be strong. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Valera Volunteer Fire Department, an organization close to Tonia’s heart. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 63, Valera, Texas 76884.

We invite you to share fond memories and words of comfort and condolence with the Black family by signing the guestbook on Tonia’s tribute page at www.stevensfuneralhome.com. Stevens Funeral Home is honored to serve the Black and Goree family.
