Mary Sue Ann (Phillips) Smith passed from this earth on January 4th, 2018. Sue Smith, as she was known as, was born in Navarro County on October 22nd, 1930. Her family moved to Aspermont, Texas three weeks after her birth. Sue spent the majority of her childhood in Tokio, Texas and Brownfield, Texas where she graduated high school in 1949. Highly thought of by school personnel, she became the secretary to the superintendent following her graduation. She would meet her future husband and love of her life in Brownfield in May of 1950 and they were married on June 30th 1950.

Sue and James would settle in Abilene, Texas where they raised 4 boys; Micheal, Johnny, Jimmy and Kenneth. Sue worked for McKesson and Robbins as a secretary until retirement. Sue and James would relocate to Coleman, Texas in 1982 where Sue then went to work at Bargain House Furniture until her final retirement. Among Sue’s interest were homemaking, cooking, quilting, crocheting, and playing the piano. Sue sang for numerous church choirs and was a member of First Baptist Church in Coleman. She often sang her favorite hymns as she worked around the house. She loved her family and looked after them when they came to visit, which was often.

Sue is survived by her sister, Dorothy Hughlett of Carlsbad, New Mexico; sons Micheal Smith of Coleman, Johnny and Gale Smith of Chester, Virginia, Jimmy and Debbie Smith of Sutherland, Virginia and Kenny and Gwen Smith of Coleman; grandchildren, Casie Smith of Abilene, Jason Smith of Penngrove, California, Josh and Christie Smith of Bryan, Mark Smith of Fredericksburg, Shanelle Smith of Abilene, Jeremy and Kerbi Smith of Laramie, Wyoming, Jeff Smith of Abilene, and Dillon Benitez of Walla Walla, Washington. She also leaves behind numerous great-grandkids. Sue was preceded in death by her husband, James Smith; parents, Van Joseph and Maggie Josephine Phillips; sisters, Dessie Strickland and Billie Gribble and brother, Charlie Phillips.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at First Baptist Church, 200 East College Avenue, Coleman, with her grandson, Rev. Jeremy Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Gouldbusk Cemetery in Gouldbusk. There will be a visitation with the family from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan, Coleman. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
