Hayes, Sr.
December 30, 1945 – November 29, 2025
Steven Edward Hayes, Sr. passed away peacefully on November 29, 2025, in Abilene, Texas, at the age of 79. Born on December 30, 1945, in Topeka, Kansas, his journey through life was marked by notable achievements and cherished relationships.
Steven's early years were shaped by the moves his family made in search of employment, as his father Leo relocated the family to various cities in Kansas, Utah, and Texas. He received an education that laid the groundwork for his later accomplishments. Steven's career began in welding, and he later became a self-taught electrical engineer. Known for his innovative spirit, he would often buy a transistor radio and modify it to communicate with people around the world. This ingenuity would lead him to learn graphic design, enabling him to design websites for businesses, a skill that showcased both his creativity and technical proficiency.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Steven honorably served in the United States Navy, a commitment that reflected his dedication to his country. Throughout his life, he was particularly fascinated by trains and railroad history, often spending hours engrossed in playing free cell on his computer while enjoying a cigar.
Steven's legacy lives on through his children: Melani Thurman of Dallas; Steven E. Hayes, Jr. of Columbus, Kansas; and Brandon Wayne Hayes of Huntsville. He is also survived by his beloved sisters, Pat Huffman of Indiana and Charlotte Evans of Brownwood. His role as a grandfather was one he cherished dearly, and he is survived by several grandchildren including Lesli Owens of Copperas Cove; Larry Norris, III, of Dallas; Elizabeth Flint; Matthew Flint of Los Angeles, California; Brandon Hayes of Panama City, Florida; Lexie Lawrence of San Angelo; and Cameron Hayes of San Saba. Steven delighted in the joy of family gatherings and treasured moments with his numerous great grandchildren, including Rhowen Nieves of Copperas Cove, along with several nieces and nephews, including Jerry and Shannon Petross of Brooksmith.
