Sammie (Smith) Chambers

Sammie Chambers, age 92, of Coleman, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at the Central Texas Nursing Home in Ballinger where she had resided for the past three years.

The family will host a visitation at 1:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W. Pecan Street in Coleman.  Bob Martin, Mike Drinkard, and Casey Perry will officiate the service.  Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery.  Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.

Sammie D Smith was born September 23, 1928, the youngest of six children to Samuel and Ruby Smith.  She was a graduate of Brownwood High School and attended Howard Payne College.

She married Alfred Chambers in Brownwood on November 28, 1948, and they celebrated 56 years together before he passed in 2004.

The Chambers family was active in the Coleman First Baptist Church where Sammie taught young people’s Sunday school and led G.A. groups with Sarah Duncan and Loyce Wheat.

Sammie worked locally at Anthony’s, J.C. Penny, Bowen Drug, the Coleman Hospital, and for Dr.’s Jolly, McNeill, and Wadleigh in Abilene when Al was stationed there.

Sammie is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three sisters, Anita Thomas, Wena Drinkard, and Molly Sears; two brothers, Fernoye and Audis Smith; and by her sister/cousin, Lettie B. Perry.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Renza Smith Rogers of Watauga; her four children, Alfreda (Freda) Shepard and husband Glenn of Ballinger, Phil Chambers and wife Judy of Coleman, Donna Bailey and husband Rod of Highland Village, and Tena James and husband Steve of Hillsboro.

Also surviving are her grandchildren, Jodie and Bo Digby, Aimee and Joseph Bunting, Joylynn and Chris Mackey, Randy and Erin Chambers, Rebecca Bailey, James and Celina Chambers, Christopher Bailey, Clynt James, Christen and Andrew Rogers, and Courtney Mears; 19 great-grandchildren with number 20 due soon.

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the employees and staff at Central Texas Nursing Center in Ballinger and Dr. Darron Atwood for their love and care of our mom!
