Reginald Mike Lagow, known to many as Michael, passed away peacefully in his sleep after a lengthy health journey at his residence in Coleman, Texas, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. He was born on August 10, 1957, in San Antonio, Texas. At three days of birth, Michael was lovingly adopted by Reginald and Ruth Lagow through Buckner Children’s Home in Dallas, Texas. He was always willing to share his heart-warming adoption story. It was a story to be heard!
Michael grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in the class of 1975. After leaving Coleman to attend Texas Tech University, he had an extensive and successful decades long career in the security industry in Lubbock, Midland, Houston, New York City, Atlanta, and Dallas. Over those years, he worked for several security companies before building nine corporations in Dallas, including SYSTEMSgroup and Safeguard Security Holdings, Inc. Upon retirement in 2016, Michael returned to his hometown of Coleman, Texas. Michael’s presence in the security industry nationwide was well known and respected.
He had a loving and outgoing personality with a contagious laugh and voice that left a lasting impression on those around him. Michael and his life partner, Brian, were always willing to help the Coleman community and those in need. He found great joy in giving back and was involved in many community events, including Fiesta De Paloma, Miss Coleman County, Coleman Christmas Parade, and events at RLVenue. The event that brought him so much joy and happiness was the Thanksgiving night shopping event with snow and Santa. As many know in Coleman, Michael created a beautiful podcast studio downtown, attention to his health took precedence over the opening of the studio. Through these efforts, he shared his time and kindness freely, and his presence will be remembered by many for years to come.
Michael is survived by his life partner of 35 years, Brian Cates, extended family and friends in the Dallas and Coleman communities. Many lives were brightened, enriched, and forever changed by his business acumen, friendship, love, and generous spirit.
He was preceded in death by his father, Reginald Lagow; his mother, Ruth Virginia Beaver Lagow; and his sister, Cathy Jean Lagow Withers.
Michael’s life was one of building businesses, building business relationships, generosity, laughter, and respect for those around him. He gave of himself to his community, cherished the people closest to him, and leaves behind a memory that will continue to live in the hearts of all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life event will be on Friday, November 13th at RLVenue, 415 S. Commercial Avenue, in Coleman, Texas at 6:00PM.
We invite you to share fond memories and words of comfort and condolence with the Lagow and Cates family by signing the guestbook on Michael’s tribute page at www.stevensfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.
