Paul David Wheat, age 66, of Coleman, died Friday, January 20, 2017, at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 22, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Coleman with Rev. Richard Hetzel, Rev. John Stanislaw and Jeffrey Herring, his nephew, officiating. Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

He was born Paul David Wheat on September 20, 1950, in Coleman, Texas, a son of Sidney A. Wheat and Lois Parker Wheat. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School, Class of 1969. He graduated from Tarleton University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. Paul was a banker in Coleman for 40 years, retiring as a Vice President from Coleman County State Bank in 2015. He was active in many organizations, including the Kiwanis Club in Coleman and also serving as a State Director. He was the past president of the Exchange Club and served on the Board of the Coleman Chamber of Commerce and was president of that board from 1990-1991. He was active in Little League in Coleman, served as president and on the board of the American Heart Association, and was honored by them by having the walk named for him, several years ago. Paul served on the Housing Authority Board and Child Welfare Board, where he also was Treasurer. In 2000 he was honored by the Coleman Chamber of Commerce as the Citizen of the Year. Paul was a past director of the West Texas Chapter of the American Institute of Banking. He was a long-time member of the Coleman Rodeo Association, serving as Treasurer. Paul was involved with the State Bar of Texas Grievance Committee, Districts 14 and 14C. He also served as Treasurer of Keep Coleman Beautiful, Coleman Business Peoples Association and the City of Coleman Planning and Zoning Commission. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee. Paul loved Coleman and was active in many organizations that he felt would make Coleman a better place to live, work and raise children.

Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Phyllis Wheat of Plano; one sister and brother-in-law, Jeane and Rickey Keas of Coleman; nephew, Pete Herring of Lubbock and his daughter Bailey of Blanket; nephew, Jeffrey Herring and wife Charlotte of Slaton and their children Summer Barber (husband J.P.), Jade Johnson (husband Brad)and Katie Weaver (husband Travis) all of Lubbock; a niece, Tabitha Seay (husband Kris) of Brownwood; his step-mother, Billie Prater Wheat of Wheeler; several cousins; godchildren, Lily and Chet Paul Norris of Coleman; dear friends, Cameron and Brook Norris, Sandra Barr and Connie Turner all of Coleman, and many other friends who were special to Paul.

Visitation with the family will be held on Saturday, January 21, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas 76834.
