Newell Earl (Shorty) Taylor

Newell "Shorty" Taylor, 87, of Coleman, died Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Bangs Nursing Home in Bangs. Funeral service will be 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Newell "Shorty" Taylor was born February 4, 1926 in Brookshire, Texas, one of 16 children born to Joe Bartlett Taylor and Annie Lee Kimbrough Taylor. He grew up all over Texas, as his parents harvested crops all over. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. He then served in the U.S. Army Reserves for another six years. He married his first wife, Billie Jean. She preceded him in death in 1988. Shorty worked as roughneck in the oil field in Seminole. He moved to Coleman in 1989 from Waskom. He married Lola Mae Goodwin on February 22, 1990 in Coleman. She preceded him in death in March, 1998. Shorty was a member of the VFW and North Coleman Baptist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Jean and Penny Louise; one brother, Odis Taylor of Seminole; one sister, Tommie Jenkins of California; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters.

Family visitation will be from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
