Mike Anderson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on August 23, 2024 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. Born Michael Stewart Anderson on February 21, 1960, in El Paso, Mike led a life marked by hard work and dedication to family and community.
During the 1980s, he made his mark as the youngest driller for Bandera Drilling in the oil fields of Texas, demonstrating an exceptional work ethic that would define his career. He later found a home at Kohler in Brownwood, where he dedicated 36 years of his life before retiring. Mike was not just a skilled worker; he was a mentor, teaching his children and grandchildren the value of hard work and the importance of perseverance. Known for his resourcefulness, he could fix anything, a skill that endeared him to many.
Mike’s education began in Coleman, where he graduated from Coleman High School. This foundation instilled in him the values that guided his life, as he balanced a career with a passion for engaging in the world around him. Outside of work, Mike cherished the simple pleasures of life. He found joy in hunting, fishing, and the thrilling excitement of lawn mower racing, activities that allowed him to connect with nature and the community he loved.
Mike met Verna Holland and they married on September 9, 2006 in Coleman. One of Mike's proudest accomplishments was his tireless volunteer work during the Christmas season, where he joyfully took on the role of being a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. His warm spirit shone as he greeted passersby, handing out suckers to children and embodying the truly festive spirit of giving.
Mike leaves behind his loving wife, Verna Anderson of Bangs; two sons, Esley Anderson and wife, Jessica, of Cuero, Matt "Bub" Anderson of Odessa; one brother, Kelby Anderson and wife, Lisa of Jackson, Georgia. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Ashlyn Anderson, Cross Anderson and River Anderson along with several nieces and nephews, including David Jones and Thorne Anderson.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, William Kenneth and Joan Niell Anderson, who instilled in him the values and resilience that he carried throughout his life. Their legacy lives on through Mike’s family, who will forever cherish his memory.
As friends and family gather to honor Mike’s remarkable life, they will celebrate the legacy of kindness, labor, and joy he fashioned. A visitation will take place on August 26, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m., both held at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W Pecan Street in Coleman. Interment will follow in the Shields Cemetery.
The family has requested that memorial donations in memory of Mike be made to the Salvation Army, 403 Lakeway Drive, Brownwood, Texas 76801.
Mike Anderson’s spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him, reminding us all to work hard, love deeply and spread joy in every small act of kindness. His memory will forever be a guiding light to his family and all who were lucky enough to know him.
