Mavis Jo Barnes Goodwin

April 20, 1925 — March 15, 2017

Mavis Jo Barnes Goodwin, 91, former Coleman resident, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 West Pecan Street, with Rev. Dick Schultz officiating. Burial will be in the Coleman City Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Mavis Jo Barnes on April 20, 1925 in Coleman County, to E.M. Barnes and Lennie Nora Short Barnes. She grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1943. She later attended nursing school and received her Vocational Nursing certificate. On February 1, 1943, she married Luther Earl Goodwin. He preceded her in death on December 19, 2001.

Mavis was a proud member of the nursing profession. She worked as a Licensed Vocational Nurse at Overall-Morris Hospital, Brownwood Hospital and Holiday Hill Nursing Home. She also sat with patients in their homes. She retired in 2009. Mavis was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a strong Christian, as well as a long-time member of the Elm Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include one sister, Dean Caldwell of Bonham; one daughter, Jodi Pate of Haltom City; three sons, Larry Goodwin and wife, Donna, of Temple, Randy Goodwin of Haltom City, Kary Goodwin of Coleman; four grandchildren, Daryl Pate and wife, Suzie, of Fort Worth, Shelia Mitchell and husband, Caleb, of McKinney, Garrett Goodwin and wife, Estella, of Rogers, Derek Goodwin of San Angelo; 11 great grandchildren, Hannah Mitchell, Josiah Mitchell, Naomi Mitchell, Jordan Mitchell, Sarah Mitchell, Thomas Goodwin, Kristen Goodwin, Brianna Pate, Megan Pate, Blain Goodwin, Shaylee Goodwin and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Earl, Mavis was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.

Memorial donations in memory of Mavis may be made to the Smithlawn Maternity Home of Lubbock, P. O. Box 6451, Lubbock, Texas 79493-6451 or Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, P. O. Box 1890, Amarillo, Texas 79174-0001.

Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the funeral home.
