Marylee Nurmi, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, in Coleman, Texas.
She was born in Dailey, Colorado on July 9, 1931, to Howard Cassell and Ruth Anna Soliday. At the age of six, she moved in with her grandparents, Charles Soliday and Miranda Griever Soliday, in Dailey, Colorado where she attended school and graduated from eighth grade in 1945. Marylee then moved in with her mother and stepfather Eldred Atkins and Ruth Ann Soliday north of Haxtun where she graduated from Haxtun High School in 1949.
After high school, Marylee attended Central Business College in Denver, Colorado. She married Lloyd Carl Long on June 24, 1950, and to this union two daughters were born; Lou Ann Long and Kathleen Jane Long. Marylee and Lloyd later moved to Seattle, Washington. She and Lloyd later divorced.
On February 17, 1962, Marylee was baptized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Renton, Washington. In 1963, she moved to Longview, Washington where she met and married Robert Allan Nurmi on July 16, 1964, in Renton. Robert adopted her daughter, Kristine Ruth Nurmi and on July 12, 1965, Robert and Marylee welcomed their son, Kenneth Robert Nurmi. Robert joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on February 17, 1972, in Chadron, Nebraska and on April 20, 1973, Marylee and Robert were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Utah Temple. Kristine Ruth and Kenneth Robert Nurmi were sealed to them at this time also. Marylee and Roberts grandson, Nathan Surratt, who passed away in 1973 of crib death, was sealed to Robert and Marylee in 1997 in the St. George Utah Temple.
In 1968, Marylee became interested in genealogy and started working on her family line, which led to her doing extensive research on it until 1997 when she and Robert decided to buy an RV and travel. After selling their home in Hurricane, Utah, Marylee and Robert spent the next thirteen years traveling all over the United States. One of their favorite things to do was square dancing. They spent twenty-three years square dancing and enjoyed every minute of it.
Those left to cherish the memory of Marylee are her daughters, Lou Ann Long Manemann and husband Roger, Kathleen Jane Long White, Kristine Ruth Nurmi Percy and husband Terry. Marylee loved her grandchildren, Heather Coleman and husband Loren, Jason Burnham and wife April, Erica Serrano and husband Vego, Trina Farrand and husband Eric, Bernard Manemann, Hannah Manemann, Shawna Renee Sheridan and husband Chris. Fourteen great-grandchildren; and her best friend since 1970, Dianne Miller.
Preceding Marylee in death is her husband, Robert on November 22, 2012, and her son, Kenneth on November 15, 2012; her parents, Howard Cassell in 1977 and Ruth Atkins in 1997; half-sister, Barbara Ann Atkins in 2012; her grandson, Nathan Enice Surratt in 1973; and granddaughter, Tanya Miranda Burnham in 2010; her great-grandson, Conner LaRon Monroe Coleman in 2024.
Memorial donations in memory of Marylee can be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2201 W. Country Club Road, Roswell, New Mexico, 88201.
A celebration of Marylee’s life will be held in Roswell, New Mexio and will be announced when finalized.
