Lucy Rebecca Greaves, known to her friends and students as Becky, passed away on April 15, 2024, at Holiday Hill Nursing Home with her family by her side.
Becky was born on November 9, 1942, in College Station, Texas to Zeno Hemphill and Helen Josephine “Joe” Morris Hemphill. Becky's journey of education began at Coleman High School where she graduated in 1961. She further pursued her academic endeavors at Baylor University, Mexico City, and finally obtained her degree in education from Texas Tech University.
She was a beloved schoolteacher who dedicated over thirty years of her life to shaping young minds in various locations such as New Deal, Hutchins, Shallowater, and Coleman. Becky's passion for teaching was evident through her love and support for her students.
Apart from her significant career achievements, Becky was actively involved in community organizations such as the 4-H club, Coleman Garden Club, and the Circle C Cattlewomen. Her commitment to nurturing both young minds and plants showcased the depth of compassion she held for those around her.
Becky's hobbies reflected her love for nature as she enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly with horses. Gardening brought her immense joy, alongside creating lasting memories with her grandchildren whom she adored dearly.
One of Becky's proudest accomplishments was being a devoted member of the United Christian and Presbyterian Church in Coleman. Her faith played a fundamental role in guiding her through life's journey.
Becky is survived by her loving husband, Dale Greaves of Coleman; her children Pamela Beth Greaves of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Cindy Sue Greaves Barker and husband Rodney of Coleman; Dusty Greaves and wife Kristi of Coleman; cherished grandchildren Sofia Wolinski, Gabby Herridge, Shelbi Cobb and husband Ian; Kade Greaves and Blake Greaves; great-grandson Case Cobb; as well as her brother Jo Pat Hemphill and wife Maxine of Coleman.
Becky is preceded in death by her parents Zeno Hemphill and Helen Josephine "Joe" Morris Hemphill.
The family will host a visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2024, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman. Family and friends are invited to a funeral service celebrating her remarkable life at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the United Christian and Presbyterian Church, 1609 S. Commercial Avenue, in Coleman. Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.
Her legacy as a dedicated educator and kind-hearted individual will live on in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing her. The family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be given in memory of Becky to the United Christian and Presbyterian Church, 1609 S. Commercial Avenue, Coleman, Texas 76834 or to the Allen Center at Holiday Hill, 245 State Highway 153, Coleman, Texas 76834.
