Judy Gail Hammonds, a beloved wife, mother, and dedicated homemaker, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 20th, 2026, at Songbird Lodge in Brownwood, Texas. Born on August 3, 1943, in Rising Star, Texas, Judy's life was marked by unwavering love, devotion, and service to her family and community.

Judy's commitment to nurturing others was evident through her exceptional role as a child-care provider. Throughout her lifetime, she lovingly cared for the majority of children in Coleman County, treating each one with the same affection and attention as if they were her own. Her warm heart and gentle spirit made a lasting impact on countless families and children who were fortunate to know her.

Her marriage to James E. Hammonds on April 9, 1960, in Brownsville, Texas, was one of her proudest accomplishments. Together, they built a life filled with love and family, a testament to the deep bond they shared. Judy’s warmth extended beyond her immediate family; she was always ready to lend a helping hand to any friend in need, embodying a heart of gold that touched many lives.

Judy was also a devoted grandmother who took great joy in supporting her ten grandchildren at their sporting events. She delighted in traveling and cherished the opportunity to embark on “road trips” with anyone eager to share in the adventure.

She is survived by her children: James E. Hammonds, II and his wife, Maria; Jeff Hammonds and his wife, Michelle; Janna Watson and her husband, Thomas; and Jeani Baker. Judy also leaves behind a legacy through her ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, all of whom felt the warmth of her love and presence.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Gray and Johnny Callie Pascheil Gray; her loving husband, James E. Hammonds; her grandson, J.J. Hammonds; her brother, C.M. Gray; and her sister, Donna Jo Morton.

Family, friends, and community members are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on Sunday, May 24th, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, located at 400 W Pecan St, in Coleman. A graveside service will follow on Monday, May 25th, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Coleman City Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.

Judy Gail Hammonds leaves behind a profound legacy of love, kindness, and dedication that will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her. Her gentle spirit and unwavering care continue to inspire those who were fortunate to share in her life’s journey.
