John Mark Weatherred, age 59, of Fort Worth, Texas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2025, while on a cruise. A service will be held on Friday, September 19th, at 6:00 PM at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. There will be a visitation prior to the service at 5:00 PM at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas.
John Mark was born on September 28 ,1965 in Coleman, Texas to Sumter and LaVerne Weatherred. While growing up in Coleman, he was active in 4-H, livestock shows, horse shows, sports, band, and many school activities. John Mark formed many close childhood friendships that have grown stronger through the years. He graduated from Coleman High School (1984) and Angelo State University (1989).
John Mark had a love for history and literature, and those that attended school with him know that he was academically gifted. He used his love of knowledge and his desire to help others to become an amazing educator, teacher, principal, and education consultant. For 35 years, John Mark shared his vast knowledge, kindness, humor, and exceptional ability to inspire and motivate students and teachers. From teaching in Coleman ISD to delivering professional development sessions in school districts across the country, John Mark had a positive impact on many lives.
While John Mark’s career as an education consultant provided many opportunities for travel, he truly thrived on travel excursions with his family and friends. Trips included Alaska, Las Vegas, Key West, London, Amsterdam, New York City, and his favorite place, New Orleans! Many of his friends will miss the annual pictures from Mardi Gras and living vicariously through John Mark’s posting of parades, Cajun food, and costumes.
John Mark’s life and his love for New Orleans was enriched when he met Darrell Whitten, a native of Louisiana. They were married on December 1, 2022. They made their home in Fort Worth, along with Tucker and Peanut.
John Mark is survived by his husband Darrell, and his father, Sumter Weatherred, many cousins, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, LaVerne Weatherred.
Following the service, there will be a Celebration of Life at Scotty’s Bistro, 601 S. Commercial Ave, in Coleman. Wear your Mardi Gras colors!
