He was born Herbie Conrad Strength on May 6, 1951, in Coleman to William James Strength and Louise Slayton Strength. He grew up in Cross Plains and Coleman. Herbie then served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, Herbie went to work in the oil fields. Herbie worked in the oil fields for over 30 years, retiring in 2011.
