Helen Weatherred Cross passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Redstone Assisted Living Center in Brownwood, Texas. She was 93 years old.

Born on June 12, 1933, in Coleman, Texas, Helen’s life was deeply rooted in the values and community of her cherished hometown. The daughter of John Sumter Weatherred and Louise Dibrell Weatherred, Helen grew up surrounded by the support and love of her family. She was a graduate of Coleman High School, where she formed lifelong friendships and developed her signature sense of kindness and determination. After high school, Helen furthered her education at North Texas State University, embarking on a journey that would see her touch many lives with her grace and commitment.

Helen’s professional journey began at Life Insurance Company of the Southwest, where she dedicated many years as a skilled bookkeeper. Her diligence and attention to detail were greatly valued, and her work ethic left a lasting impression on colleagues and clients alike.

A woman of many talents, Helen’s passion for needlework became one of her most notable joys. Alongside her beloved husband, Wayne Curtis Cross, Helen opened a needlepoint and stained-glass company in Houston, Texas. Their partnership in life and business brought them much happiness and camaraderie. Helen’s creativity and expertise in needlework were evident to all who saw her work; she earned numerous first-place ribbons at the State Fair of Texas, a testament to her artistry and perseverance.

Helen was devoted to her faith and was a proud member of the First Methodist Church in Coleman. Her involvement with her church community was a source of deep fulfillment, and her gentle spirit uplifted those around her.

She was a devoted wife to Wayne Curtis Cross, who preceded her in death. Helen was also preceded in death by her parents, John Sumter Weatherred and Louise Dibrell Weatherred; her sisters, Margaret Saunders and Mary Louis McMahan; and her nephew, John Mark Weatherred.

Helen’s legacy continues through those who survive her: her dear sons, Ronald Brown and wife Bonnie and Tim Brown; her loving daughter, Linda Tanner and husband Matthew; her brother, Sumter Weatherred; her grandchildren, Mark Brown and wife Jennifer, Elizabeth Jones and husband Chuck, Alison Gillies and husband Stuart, and Leanna Godwin and husband Drew. Each of them carries a part of her unwavering love, guidance, and wisdom forward. Helen is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Helen’s warm presence, keen intelligence, and gentle heart will long be remembered by all who knew her. Her dedication to her family and community, her craftsmanship, and her abiding faith are treasures she leaves to future generations.
