Gene Amos

Gene Amos, age 69, of Burkett, died Thursday, November 29, 2018, at his residence.  Memorial graveside service with inurnment and military honors will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2019, at the Burkett Cemetery Pavilion.  A reception will be held at the Burkett Community Center immediately following the service for those attending the service.

He was born Harold Gene Amos on December 29, 1948, in Comanche, Texas.   He was reared by his mother, Opal Tinney Amos Echols, and his step-father, Roy Echols.  He grew up in Midland where he also attended school.  Gene served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War where he was exposed to Agent Orange.  On August 1, 1970, he married Thelma Merle Walker in the Burkett Baptist Church.  Following their marriage, they lived in Fort Worth for about two years, Northeast Texas for 10 years before moving to Idaho, where they resided for 16 years.  They moved from Idaho to Midland where they lived until three years ago, when they moved to Burkett.

Due to Gene’s exposure to Agent Orange, he suffered with ill health for many years and was a disabled American veteran.  Even though he was disabled, he had a wonderful work ethic and always provided for his family, without depending on welfare.  Gene enjoyed snowmobiling and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.  He was a devoted husband and father and a member of the Church of God International based in Tyler, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Merle Amos of Burkett; three sons, Michael Vee Amos and wife Kathryn of Yellow Pine, Idaho, Scottie Gene Amos and wife Anna of Boise, Idaho, and Toby Lawrence Amos of Midland; one grandson, David Scott Amos of Boise, Idaho; half-brothers, Paul Echols and wife Tammy of Linden, Jerry Echols and wife Sandra of Ore City, Dan Echols and wife Judy of Potosi; sisters-in-law, Cathy Echols of Stephenville and Sharon Amos of Texarkana; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Opal and Roy Echols, half-brother Bill Belyeu, sisters-in-law, Marilyn Belyeu and Margaret Amos, brothers Frank Amos and Calvin Amos, step-brother, Arly Echols and a sister Mae Billingsley.
