Freda Lavell Stephenson, age 87, of Coleman County went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in Coleman at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. David McLean, pastor of First Baptist Church in Santa Anna, officiating. Burial will follow at Brown Ranch Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Freda Lavell Jones was born one of six children to Fred Jones and Alice Cornelius Jones on January 21, 1931, in Fisk, Texas. She grew up in Coleman County and attended school at Mozelle. On April 2, 1947, she married Lester “Red” Stephenson in Coleman, and he preceded her in death on December 9, 2014. Following their marriage, they lived in Coleman and Abilene before returning to Coleman County in 1986. Freda worked periodically outside the home, but found her true joy working with her husband on their ranch. While living in Abilene, Freda and Red were members of Broadview Baptist Church. She was a much-loved and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. Her family was a vital part of her life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Freda was a member of the Rockwood Quilting Club and was a talented and creative quilter, making quilts for everyone in her family. She was an accomplished artist and enjoyed oil painting, pastels, and pen and ink drawings. Freda loved reading and studying Bible scripture and taught Sunday school classes for many years. She was also an active member of the Pecan Valley Genealogical Society.
Survivors include her three children: Randy Stephenson and wife Glenda of Clyde, Cathy Higgins and husband Steve of Abilene, Karyn Kane and husband Frank of San Antonio; eleven grandchildren: Rebecca King, Toni Dalton, Heather Brewer, Mindy Negus, Jenee’ Higgins, Cory Higgins, Talon Kane, Colton Kane, Krislyn Kane, Joshua Collier, Jonathan Collier; twenty great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one sister: Frances Richardson of Santa Anna; and three brothers: William Earl Jones and wife Joan of Voss, Jerry Jones and wife Liz of Coleman, Rodney Jones and wife Bobbie of Coleman.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanene Jones, and a daughter-in-law, Jaynie Beth Stephenson.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 16, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas 76834.
