Dr. Mike Edington, affectionately known as "Doc," passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at Coleman County Medical Center with his family by his side. Born on November 16, 1948, in Coleman, Texas, Mike dedicated his life to the community he loved, returning to Coleman to practice veterinary medicine for 51 years. His unwavering devotion to the Coleman Vet Clinic was evident, where he formed many lifelong friendships and showcased his deep care for the animals entrusted to him.

Mike's journey began in Coleman, where he graduated from Coleman High School in 1967 before pursuing a degree in Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University, graduating in 1972. His love for veterinary medicine was matched only by his passion for beef cattle, often stating, "I love being around beef cattle and people producing beef cattle.” Mike also worked twelve years with the Ranch Brigade program at Warren Ranch. He taught over 288 young people about cattle handling and processing. It was a first for some of these future beef producers. Mike's commitment extended beyond his practice; he was a beloved member of the First Methodist Church in Coleman, serving as a trustee while embodying the spirit of generosity and kindness towards all.

Mike married Theresa Henderson on August 22, 1970, in Coleman. They celebrated 39 years of marriage until her passing on April 8, 2010.

Throughout his illustrious career, Mike's contributions were notable. He was a proud and active member of the Coleman community, involved in numerous organizations. He dedicated 22 years to the Coleman Independent School Board, including 19 years as president, and served on the Overall Morris Hospital Board for a decade. His leadership and service were recognized when he was awarded the Citizen of the Year in 2005 by the Coleman Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, Mike contributed his expertise to various boards, including the Coleman Development Board and the EDC Board, while being an active member of professional associations such as the Texas Veterinarian Medicine Association and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. His commitment to local sports was also celebrated, leading to his induction into the Bluecat Hall of Honor in 2023 as a lifetime member of the Bluecat Booster Club. Mike was also a 50-year member of the Coleman Rodeo Association.

Mike is survived by his children, Michelle Burkey and husband Clint of Coleman, and Rob Edington and wife Heather of Allen. He cherished his role as a grandfather, deeply loving his grandchildren: Mason Burkey, Kenley Castleberry and husband Kayden, Adley Johnson, Hogan Johnson, Brayden Edington, Sydney Edington, Bowen Johnson and fiancé Jenna, Caleb Edington, Elayna Edington, and Harrison Knox. Additionally, he is remembered fondly by his longtime companion, Nan Markland, along with her children, Matt Markland and wife Megan and Melissa Markland and significant other Zivan.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Stancil "Pig" Edington and Geraldine "Jerry" Edington, as well as his beloved wife, Theresa Edington.

His legacy of kindness, dedication, and love for both animals and people will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

The family will host a visitation from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, June 12, 2025, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman. Family and friends are invited to a funeral service celebrating his remarkable life at 10:00 am Friday, June 13, 2025, at First Methodist Church, 500 W. Live Oak Street, in Coleman with Rev. Greg Oberg officiating. Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Bowen Johnson, Hogan Johnson, Mason Burkey, Kayden Castleberry, Caleb Edington, Brayden Edington, and Harrison Markland. Serving as honorary pallbearers with be the members of the Coleman Rodeo Association.

The family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in memory of Mike be made to the Theresa Edington Scholarship, C/O Coleman ISD, 2302 Commercial Avenue, Coleman, Texas 76834.
