Dora Ann Jones Newman, a beloved member of the Coleman community and cherished matriarch, passed away on May 2, 2026, in Coleman, Texas, following a short illness. Born on October 20, 1935, in Comanche, Texas, Dora lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep commitment to her family and community until her final days.
Dora was the eldest of five sisters, having grown up in Comanche. She distinguished herself academically early in life, graduating as the Valedictorian of her high school class. Pursuing higher education with determination, she earned an associate degree in Home Economics from Tarleton State Junior College and went on to graduate in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from North Texas State College.
Her professional life reflected her strong work ethic and commitment to service. In June 1958, Dora moved to Coleman to serve as the Assistant Home Demonstration Agent in Coleman County, a role she embraced until 1961. Shortly after moving to Coleman, she met Kenneth Newman, who was a member of the First Methodist Church. They married in 1960 and celebrated almost 60 years of marriage. Subsequently, she worked alongside her late husband, Kenneth Newman, as a bookkeeper for 23 years at the Rockwell Bros. & Co. lumberyard. Her career continued with a decade-long tenure as a cashier at Shopping Basket, and in more recent years, she contributed her talents through part-time positions in retail, as a census taker in 2010, at H & R Block, and Sarah's Neighborhood Restaurant. Through each role, she exemplified reliability and dedication.
An independent spirit, Dora cherished staying active and involved. She was a longtime member of the Good Neighbor County Extension Education Association Club, serving as secretary and reporter, and volunteered with Friends of the Coleman Public Library, assisting with book sales and summer reading programs. Her organizational skills were well known; she kept meticulous files and enjoyed recounting stories about her only child and grandchildren, reflecting the warmth and pride she held for her family.
Within her church community, Dora was a soprano in the Chancel Choir and faithfully served as robe lady, overseeing the maintenance and assignment of choir robes. She was an active participant in the ladies Sunday School classes—first those taught by Jean Horne and later the class led by her daughter. Her commitment extended to working with Vacation Bible School registration, demonstrating her devotion to nurturing faith and fellowship in Coleman.
Dora’s personality was marked by independence and a strong desire to remain engaged. She lived in her own home until shortly before her passing, embodying resilience and a zest for life. Above all, she treasured time with her family, holding fond memories and a deep love for all of her family.
She is survived by her daughter Leslie Cross and son-in-law James Cross; grandchildren Michael Watson, Lane Watson, and Mallory Cross (Josh Brown); and great-grandchildren Daniel, Greyson, and Liam. Also surviving are her sister Leona Basham and several nieces and nephews who carry forward her legacy of kindness and dedication.
Dora was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Newman and sisters Thelma Schlee, Neoma Gwaltney, and Ina Shutter.
