Charles Ray (Chuck) Baker II

On January 16, 2019, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend,  Charles Ray “Chuck” Baker II, left this life at the age of 65, having completed his journey here.  There will be a time of visitation on Monday, January 21, 2019, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman.   A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m.  on Tuesday, January 22,  2019 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 303 E. College Avenue, Coleman, with Fr. Laurent Mvondo as celebrant.  Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Chuck was born May 1, 1953 in Coleman, Texas, the oldest son of Charles Ray Baker and Rosa Elizabeth Folkner Baker.  Chuck attended first and second grade in Coleman before moving with his family to Albuquerque, NM, where he graduated from West Mesa High School.  During his childhood, he was a member of Boy Scout Troop #174 and also played the trumpet in the 400 member marching band at West Mesa High School.  Following graduation, he moved to Baytown, Texas, where he attended Lee College, worked at Woolco Department Store, and Brown and Root.  In Baytown, he also met his future wife, Nancy Ward, and they married on February 14, 1975, celebrating almost 44 years of marriage.  In 1983 Chuck moved from Baytown to Coleman and worked at Radio Shack in Brownwood for about a year.  He then went to work at Shoppin’ Baskit in Coleman, where he spent the next 28 years, retiring about 5 years ago.

While living in Coleman, Chuck was a member of the Lions Club, Band Boosters, 4-H Club and for over 35 years, he never missed the Youth Hunt held by the Lions Club at Hords Creek Lake.   He was a certified assistant Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America and enjoyed going to Camp Tonkawa.  He participated, attended, and cheered on his girls in all their activities while growing up and he continued that loving care with his grandchildren.  He was a member of Northside Baptist in Albuquerque but was an active part of the faith community at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  Chuck was a friend and helper to all he met and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Baker of Coleman; his three daughters, Elizabeth Jefferson and husband Keary, Amanda Baker Roney and husband Barry, Rebecca Quinonez and husband Martin all of Coleman; his father and mother, Charles and Rosa Baker of Talpa; two brothers, James Baker of Talpa, Kenneth Baker and wife Jan of Burkett; one sister, Lisa Milligan and husband Gunner of Talpa; nine grandchildren, Tyler Ransberger, Averi Ransberger, Hannah and Olivia Jefferson, Charlie and Alexyss Bigham, Miguel and Joshua Quinonez, Nevaeh Lakosky; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Since scouting was such an important part of Chuck’s life, the family invites any and all scout troops to attend the service in Uniform.  He had a compassionate heart for children and so the family suggests memorials be made to Texas Lions Camp, 4100 Highway 27, Kerrville, Texas 78028, a camp for children with special needs, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105 or to your favorite charity.
