Charlene (Reis) Grider

November 25, 1929 — July 8, 2023

Coleman

Charlene Grider, age 93, died Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Coleman County Medical Center.  Graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion, with her nephew, Jake Grider, officiating.   Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery.  Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman.

She was born Charlene Marie Reis on November 25, 1929, in Coleman, the only child of Charlie Reis and Era “Pete” Day Reis.  She grew up in Coleman where she attended school and was part of the Class of 1948.  On December 20, 1947, she married Robert Lee Grider at First Baptist Church in Coleman.  Following their marriage, they lived in Monahans, Odessa, and New Mexico, where Bob was employed in the oil field.  In 1955, they returned to Coleman and lived here until 1968.  Their next move was to Monahans where they lived until retiring to live on a farm in Rising Star.  Bob died on October 12, 2008, and within a short time, Charlene moved back to Coleman to reside at Holiday Hill Nursing Home.  During her time at Holiday Hill, Charlene participated in all the activities that were offered there.

Charlene never worked outside the home since she felt that her job was keeping a clean home, cooking good meals for her family, raising her children and ironing.  She enjoyed ironing and was a perfectionist who always made sure that everything was crisply ironed for her family.  She was the epitome of the 1950’s homemaker and it was a role she took seriously and performed flawlessly.  Charlene loved cats but was unable to have her cats with her at the nursing home; however, she had an animated mechanical cat that was given to her by her beloved “second daughter” Bonnie Hennig.  She promptly named this cat “Precious” and enjoyed it for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her son, Alan Grider, and her grandson, David Alan Flynn.

She is survived by her daughter, Claudette Flynn of Fort Worth; three grandchildren; two close cousins, Fran Staggs and Kay Joffrion.

The family suggests that memorials be made to any local charity or organization.

Please leave kind thoughts and condolences for the family on her obituary page at www.stevensfuneralhome.com.  Stevens Funeral Home is honored to serve the Grider family.
